If you know you have a Clostridium infection, you should follow your doctor's orders, but one simple, inexpensive natural therapy will support healing and will not interfere with medications.
A strain of brewer's yeast known as Saccharomyces boulardii (sometimes labeled Sb) interferes with the toxic action of Clostridium. Sometimes Sb is enough to completely stop diarrhea and colon inflammation after the use of antibiotics, and it can be helpful in stopping diarrhea caused by Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. A clinical study, referenced below, found that this "good bacterium" reduced the risk of developing diarrhea in the hospital by over 60 per cent.
Your best bet for getting Sb into your system is the capsule form, found in health food stores and also sold by online natural products vendors. According to the manufacturers' product sheets, Sb is not found in Yoplait Yo-Plus or Dannon's DanActive, although both products provide the foods that help any Sb that is otherwise in your colon to grow.
Not everyone who is already in an intensive care unit should take probiotic supplements, so use Sb when you are getting ready to go to the hospital or after you've been discharged.
