If you are planning for good nutrition during an emergency and you are taken back by the high price of good quality whey protein products, or if you are a body builder wanting to build muscle without using dairy, or if you are setting out on a vegan diet but know the value of concentrated complete amino acids, consider raw hemp protein powder as a substitute for whey.
Hempseed protein is completely legal in the United States. It will not give you a high. The hempseed industry shells and washes hempseeds to remove any trace of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) so that it is almost (but not utterly) impossible for use of hemp protein powder or hempseed oil to result in a positive drug test for marijuana.
And the protein in raw hemp protein is unusually similar to the proteins the human body uses to make immune defense cells. Although no scientific confirms that the edestin protein in raw hemp necessarily passes through the lining of the gut and goes to the bone marrow to make white blood cells, it at least provides the amino acids in approximately the same proportion as the amino acids on the surface of white blood cells.
Where you can run into problems with hempseed proteins is that they don't mix especially well with other foods. If you are looking for raw hemp seed recipes to eat healthy in emergency situations, think of hemp seeds as a side dish rather than a main course. The very simplest way to use them is simply to add them to a can of beans. The combination gives you complete protein plus some anti-inflammatory omega-3 essential fatty acids.
Hempseed oil, incidentally, is not a substitute for whey or any other protein source. While it provides valuable essential fatty acids, the oil does not provide any protein and is somewhat more likely to cause a false-positive drug test.
