Vitamin B5 (panthothenic acid) is a useful treatment for acne, but some women should use it with caution.
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) creams, which are available from compounding pharmacists, are of potential value in treating acne. The body uses pantothenic acid to make coenzyme A, which releases energy from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. A clinical study in China of 45 males and 55 females between 12 and 30 years of age found that applying a cream made with pantothenic acid began to eliminate pimples in 1-2 weeks. The cream contained 10 grams of pantothenic acid diluted to a 20 percent concentration. It was applied 4-6 times per day. The physicians supervising the study noted no side effects.
Obtain a pantothenic acid cream from a compounding pharmacy when other treatments fail. The commercially available MSM Cream (sold by General Vitamin) is also helpful but does not have the same concentration of pantothenic acid used in the Chinese study.
In my own experience consulting to Asian manufacturers of skin care products, occasionally women complain of paradoxical effects of skin lightening agents, including creation of new age spots and acne. In every case, these women lived nearby a chemical plant that made the chemicals used in the creams.
To avoid an environmental overdose, do not use of azelaic acid and vitamin B5 creams if you live near unregulated chemical plants that make their raw ingredients. Once this complication has occurred, the way to reverse it is to use other, more appropriate products such as antioxidant cleansers, toners, and gels, and oil-free foundation for cosmetics. Evening application of a retinol- (vitamin A-) enriched product will eventually control both redness and brown spots caused by this kind of reaction.
